A fungal infection caused by a species of Candida, usually Candida albicans. It is not sexually transmitted, but rather, an opportunistic infection due to an overgrowth of fungal colonization resulting from suppression of the normal bacterial flora (often caused by taking antibiotics or experiencing hyperglycemic conditions). Candidiasis is commonly referred to as a “yeast infection” and described in relation to the area infected, such as vulvovaginal, perioral, or cutaneous. Symptoms associated with vulvovaginal candidiasis typically include genital itching and a “cottage cheese-like” discharge.
