Gender-based violence describes violence that establishes, maintains or attempts to reassert unequal power relations based on gender. It encompasses acts that inflict physical, mental or sexual harm or suffering, threat of such acts, coercion and other deprivations of liberty. (UNAIDS Terminology Guidelines, 2015)
