Salvia divinorum is an herb in the mint family of plants. The active ingredient, salvinorin A, causes short-term hallucinations after chewing fresh leaves, drinking extracted juice, smoking dried leaves like a cigarette, inhaling through water pipes (e.g., hookah), or inhaling vapors.
