Common term for a highly contagious infestation of the skin caused by Scaroptes scabiei mites that burrow into the skin, causing a highly pruritic and characteristically papular rash. Symptoms typically worsen at night. The mite is transmitted through direct contact via infested skin, clothes, towels, bedding, etc.
