A term used for an item usually constructed of absorbent materials and fashioned into a roll to be inserted into a wound or orifice so as to tamponade and/or absorb the flow of secretions, commonly blood flow (e.g., cessation of epistaxis [nose bleed], absorption of menstrual flow). Often used in reference to the absorbent product that is inserted into the vagina during menses to collect and dispose of the secretions discharged during menstruation.
