An open lesion or sore of the cutaneous or mucosal surface characterized by inflammation and loss of surface tissue. Results from various insults, including chemicals (e.g., nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), infection (e.g., Helicobacter pylori bacteria), pressure (e.g., pressure ulcer), or stasis (e.g., venous, arterial).
