Gender equality, or equality between men and women, is a recognized human right, and it reflects the idea that all human beings, both men and women, are free to develop their personal abilities and make choices without any limitations set by stereotypes, rigid gender roles or prejudices. Gender equality means that the different behaviors, aspirations and needs of women and men are considered, valued and favored equally. It also signifies that there is no discrimination on the grounds of a person’s gender in the allocation of resources or benefits, or in access to services. Gender equality may be measured in terms of whether there is equality of opportunity or equality of results. (UNAIDS Terminology Guidelines, 2015)
